How to burp your child?

Burping is an important part of routine of baby feeding. Soon after delivery, after initiation of feeds, mothers are told to burp the baby. Every time when baby go for regular checkups, importance of feeding and burping is told by pediatricians.

Why to burp and its importance?
Burps help to get rid of some air that babies tend to swallow during feeding
To avoid colic tummies mean pain in abdomen
To avoid regurgitation of feeds, due to not so strong muscle tone of food pipe in small babies
To avoid spitting of feeds

How to burp?
When burping your baby, gentle patting on your baby’s back should be done
With burps, some feeds tend to come out, so place a towel or bib under your children’s chin or on your shoulder

Different burping positions:-
Sit upright and hold your baby against your chest. Baby’s chin should rest on your shoulders as you support the baby with one hand. With other hand, gentle pat your baby’s back.
Hold your baby sitting up, in your lap or across your knee. Support your baby’s chest and head with one hand by cradling your baby’s chin in the palm of your hand. Rest the heel of your hand on baby’s chest, but be careful to grip your baby’s chin, not throat. Use other hand to pat the back.
Lay your baby on your lap on baby’s belly. Support your baby’s head and make sure it’s higher than baby’s chest. Gently pat your baby’s back.

Note:-
If your baby seems irritable while feeding, stop the feeding and burp the baby and then begin feeding again. Try burping in between feeds (whether bottle feed or breast feed)
Always burp the baby.
If baby is not burping, try different positions of burping.
Older child doesn’t need burp. As they have learnt to swallow food without swallowing air.
Sometimes feeds come out during and after burps, don’t worry.
Burping help in colic situation too.
American academy of pediatrics- burping is required up to 6 months of age.

Along with all essential and necessities for a small baby like diaper change, bathing, oiling, feeding, burping is too important for baby’s routine. Child can cry during or for burp also, just do it.
