What exactly it means?
a) Inattention:-
Child who faces difficulty in keeping themselves in one task and gets bored easily because of one
Child switches from one task to other without completing one
Child who does not follow instructions
Child forgot things needed for task

b) Hyperactivity:-
Child is in constant movements like roaming around, touching things, squirming or fidgeting etc.
c) Impulsivity:-
Child speaks or acts without thinking its results
Child who blurts out inappropriate comments, even do not wait for their turn

Diagnosis:
A child who is impulsive, hyperactive and inattentive does not necessarily have ADHD.

Many children have some of these features and symptoms happens due to some other disorder

It is important that the child is examined and diagnosed by a qualified professional who will use the strict diagnostic guidelines to determine whether the behaviors are inappropriate for the child’s age and whether the symptoms indicate ADHD or not.

Talking to our family doctor is the first start.

What causes it?
Cause remains unknown, but most research suggests that the cause lies in neurobiology or genetics. Although environmental and social factors can influence the severity of the disorder but do not cause the disorder.

But some studies have shown a relationship between alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy and the risk for ADHD in the baby. So such activities should be avoided during pregnancy

Treatment:
Medications have been used to treat ADHD:
Stimulants like methylphenidate etc seems to be the most effective class of medication and are considered to be safe. Stimulants reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve the ability to focus, work and learn. 10% children are not even helped with stimulants.

Recently, at least one non-stimulant medication has shown great potential for reducing the symptoms of ADHD

Choosing a treatment:
  • Medication seems to be essential for children with ADHD
  • Long term intensive study shows only behavioral therapy would not help to cure ADHD but combination treatment with medication is superior.
  • Children and parents might need special help to develop techniques for managing the patterns of behavior.

Many therapies work like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, social skills training, support groups and parenting skills training.
