What causes it?
Cause remains unknown, but most research suggests that the cause lies in neurobiology or genetics. Although environmental and social factors can influence the severity of the disorder but do not cause the disorder.
But some studies have shown a relationship between alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy and the risk for ADHD in the baby. So such activities should be avoided during pregnancy
Treatment:
Medications have been used to treat ADHD:
Stimulants like methylphenidate etc seems to be the most effective class of medication and are considered to be safe. Stimulants reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve the ability to focus, work and learn. 10% children are not even helped with stimulants.
Recently, at least one non-stimulant medication has shown great potential for reducing the symptoms of ADHD
Choosing a treatment:
- Medication seems to be essential for children with ADHD
- Long term intensive study shows only behavioral therapy would not help to cure ADHD but combination treatment with medication is superior.
- Children and parents might need special help to develop techniques for managing the patterns of behavior.
Many therapies work like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, social skills training, support groups and parenting skills training.
